Existing-Home Sales Ascend Again in June, First-time Buyers Provide Spark

WASHINGTON (July 21, 2016) — Boosted by a greater share of sales to first-time buyers not seen in nearly four years, existing-home sales maintained their upward trajectory in June and increased for the fourth consecutive month, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Only the Northeast saw a decline in closings in June, and sales to investors fell to their lowest overall share since July 2009.

While buyers of primary residences typically purchase homes because of the desire to be a home owner or due to a job relocation, buyers of vacation homes are motivated by other factors. Thirty-seven percent of vacation home buyers plan to use their property for vacations and family retreats, 16 percent plan to convert their vacation home into their primary residence in the future, and 13 percent purchased because of low real estate prices and the buyer found a good deal.

Sales of new single-family houses in May 2016 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 551,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 6.0 percent (±12.8%)* below the revised April rate of 586,000, but is 8.7 percent (±14.6%)* above the May 2015 estimate of 507,000.
